Heat Check Elite: Developing the Next Generation of Basketball Stars

In just its second year, Heat Check Elite has quickly made a name for itself as a program dedicated to developing young basketball players into well-rounded individuals on and off the court. With a foundation built on discipline, hard work, and a standard of excellence, the program continues to elevate the skills of its athletes while instilling valuable life lessons.

Currently, Heat Check Elite boasts three teams: two middle school squads (2029 and 2030) and a high school team (2028). These teams are stacked with promising talent, including standout players Levi Shanklin (2028), Kyree Taylor (2029), and Gavin Brents (2030).

Rising Stars of Heat Check Elite
Levi Shanklin (2028) – The Floor General

Shanklin is a high-IQ guard with an exceptional ability to score at all three levels. However, what truly sets him apart is his leadership—a rare quality for a young player. As a freshman earning varsity minutes at Shawnee High School, Shanklin has already proven he can compete at a high level. His work ethic and court awareness make him one of the most exciting prospects in the program.

Kyree Taylor (2029) – The Sniper
Taylor is a smooth, high-IQ player who plays the game at his own pace, never seeming rushed. His shooting ability is elite, making him one of the best shooters in Kentucky for his class. His coachability and composure on the floor allow him to be a consistent and reliable presence for the 2029 squad.

Gavin Brents (2030) – The Young Phenom
Brents is an athletic and hard-nosed competitor who stands out even among older players. As a sixth-grader playing up, he showcases a level of skill and intensity beyond his years. With his motor and natural athleticism, Brents has significant upside and is a name to watch as he continues to develop.

Coaching & Leadership
Heat Check Elite is led by Justin Buford Jr., the Program Director and Head Coach for the 2028 and 2030 teams. With four years of coaching experience across AAU and school basketball, Buford has helped young athletes grow in their skill sets while preparing them for the next level. His coaching résumé includes stints as JV Head Coach at Crosby Middle School and Varsity Head Coach at Meyzeek Middle School.

Assisting in the program’s development is Jalen Buford, the Co-Director and Head Coach of the 2029 team. With two years of AAU coaching experience, Buford has played a crucial role in shaping the Heat Check Elite culture. His commitment to his players and passion for the game make him a key figure in the program’s continued success.

Building a Culture of Excellence
Heat Check Elite is more than just an AAU basketball program—it’s a platform for young athletes to grow, compete, and develop as leaders. With a coaching staff committed to their players’ success and a group of talented athletes ready to take the next step, the future is bright for this up-and-coming program.
