Hoop Connect Desert Connect tipped off Friday at the Southern Utah Sports Academy in Cedar City, Utah. The event featured talent from the 5th through 12th grade divisions, and from the jump, the energy was undeniable. Programs, players, and parents all arrived with anticipation and a readiness to compete. Every game had something to take away from individual performances to fundamentally sound team plays that built momentum and set the tone. Even though this was not a tournament weekend, the energy said otherwise. Every team played hard regardless of the score.
Varsity Division Breakdown
The Varsity division offered one of the most complete performances of the weekend. Participating teams included SUSA HS, Apex Basketball Club, Cedar, the Salem Strike, and the Las Vegas Unleashed. Across both days, the team that made a consistent statement was the Las Vegas Unleashed steady on both ends of the floor with scores to back it up. The Salem Strike competed hard every game, bringing an aggressive defensive identity to every matchup. SUSA consistently executed fundamental offensive plays, showing the kind of disciplined basketball that translates at the next level.
From Day 1, Cedar’s Austin Garrett was a standout performer, finishing with 15 points and proving to be a constant downhill threat against Apex Basketball. On the other side, Apex 15U’s Jake Streadbeck made timely shots from multiple levels of the court, showed smart IQ passes for his age, and consistently demonstrated a high basketball IQ.
8th Grade Division Breakdown
In the 8th grade division, the constant theme was clear: the team that took care of the ball, pushed in transition, and took smart shots consistently put themselves in a position to win or stay competitive. Teams that participated included Susa Warby, Ignited, Susa Marcus, Susa Nichy, and Mesquite Magic.
Apex’s Brandon Lake was the standout of the division. Scoring 21 points at the guard position, Lake used his size and length to his advantage throughout displaying a soft touch around the rim, dribbling with intentional tempo, and showing a shifty first step that kept defenders off balance. His foot speed and floater touch made him a consistent threat getting into and around the paint. Overall, every player was hungry to show their skill. At this level, players are starting to get a better feel for their game, and you can clearly see the ones who have genuinely invested in honing their craft.
Middle School Girls Division Breakdown
The constant theme in this division was which team had the most coordination and which team could execute the basic fundamentals. Every team played hard and competed relentlessly regardless of the score. The highlighted matchup was Utah Stars Ignite vs. Susa Arlynn, final score 27–29.
The standout player in this game was Taylor, a traditional playmaking guard who kept her eyes above the floor at all times. She brought the ball up the court with poise, understood spacing, and hit her free throws down the stretch when it mattered. She finished with 5 points and showed the kind of composure that coaches love to develop.
Final Thoughts
A great weekend of basketball at all levels both days. It was incredible to watch players develop from game to game recognizing their early mistakes and using them as fuel to improve. As the season continues, team chemistry will only grow, and with better chemistry comes more pure basketball across the board. Plenty of solid standouts throughout the weekend, and it’s exciting to see how they continue to grow as players and how coaches will develop them throughout the season.
